Meanwhile, Money saved in Piggyvest by Nigerians appears to be stolen by fraudsters/hackers, with two customers alleging they lost over N2.36 million – but the company says nothing can be done.
Olaniyi Hafeez, a Piggyvest customer, was said to have lost N165,300 due to the hackers’ fraudulent activity.
His account was allegedly hacked, resulting in an unknown fraudster transferring the funds to a Sterling Bank account held by an unknown third party.
A Twitter user who simply identified himself as Rotimi shared Hafeez’s story on social media, claiming Hafeez had been operating the Piggyvest account since 2016, but lost N165,300 on September 16, 2022.
He explained that the sum was made up of $181 in dollar savings, which were converted into naira, as well as money from Hafeez’s Flex account, which was also housed in Piggyvest.
Ripples Nigeria discovered that the money was sent to a Sterling Bank account that was not linked to Hafeez’s account for withdrawal, indicating that the fraudster was able to change the account and circumvent Piggyvest’s security.
Rotimi questioned how quickly the money was transferred. “How can an external person have access to his PiggyVest password and security question and answer without his permission?”
“How can a withdrawal be made without attaching the bank account to which it was made?”
Rotini shared an email that was said to be Piggyvest’s response to Hafeez’s question about how his account was accessed by a third party and his money withdrawn without his permission. In the email, Piggyvest stated that the funds could not be recovered because they had been “moved to the Sterling Bank account.” and extended “sincere apologies for the inconvenience” to the customer who had been the victim of fraud.
Meanwhile, another customer, simply known on Twitter as “The Caliphate,” claimed that N2.2 million was transferred from their own Piggyvest account within five days.
They claimed that the transfer began on the same day Hafeez lost his N165,300 and lasted from September 16 to September 20 of the same month. They shared screenshots of the money stolen from the account by the fraudster and tagged Piggyvest.
The Caliphate reported that Piggyvest customer service was unhelpful in recovering the N2.2 million stolen from the account. The customer claimed that he received no notification from Piggyvest while the funds were being transferred.
“I’ve been sending emails and calling their customer service representative. There are no direct answers. They all just use me to catch a cruise on top of my hard-earned money. This is not going to slide o, I’ll take it to any length.” According to the Caliphate.
As of the publication of this report, PiggyVest had not responded to Ripples Nigeria’s inquiry.

Major Factors Influencing dollars to naira today black market
Here are some of the reasons for the dollars-to-naira exchange rate decline.
Inflation Rates: Inflation is well understood to have a direct impact on black market exchange rates. If the Nigerian economy can be stabilised and inflation is brought under control, the naira will benefit; however, if the naira continues to fall, it could indicate that food and other necessities are becoming more expensive on a daily basis.
Interest Rates: Another tool to keep an eye on is interest rates. If the interest rate at which banks lend money rises, the economy will contract and the naira’s value will fall.
National debt can have an impact on investor confidence and, as a result, the flow of funds into the economy. If capital inflows are significant, the naira exchange rate will rise in its favour.
Speculators: Speculators frequently influence the naira and USD exchange rates. They hoard money in the hope of making a profit, causing the naira to plummet even further.
Conditions of Trade: Despite the fact that Nigeria currently has a trade deficit, favourable trade terms will cause the naira to appreciate against the dollar. Everything is supplied by China, India, and the majority of Asian countries.
