Meanwhile,

Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), stated that the international community must come to Nigeria’s aid due to the country’s rising debt.

On Thursday, Adesina told the Nigeria International Economic Partnership Forum in New York that Nigeria requires assistance in reducing its debt burden, which is now N42.84 trillion ($103 billion).

Ripples Nigeria previously reported that external debt had increased to N16.61 trillion and domestic debt had reached N26.23 trillion as of June 30, 2022, following President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s borrowing of N3.28 trillion in the first six months of this year.

At the forum, the AfDB President reiterated the impact of rising debt on Nigeria, saying, “Nigeria’s total debt level is N42.84 trillion or $103 billion.” The country’s external debt is N16.61 trillion, or $40 billion. Ladies and gentlemen, Nigeria requires assistance in addressing its debt burden.”

“Financing is critical because Africa’s debt to GDP ratio has increased to 70% — several countries are at risk of high debt distress due to unstable, unsustainable debt levels,” he added.

Adesina explained the situation, saying, “International debt partnerships are assisting Africa and Nigeria.” The International Monetary Fund issued $650 billion in special drawing rights (SDR) to help countries with liquidity. However, Africa received only $33 billion of that total. It’s quite small.

“A call by African heads of state for developed economies to rechannel $100 billion in additional SDRs to Africa will go a long way toward reducing Nigeria’s debt burden.”

“By allocating some of these SDRs through the African Development Bank, we will be able to leverage them four times because we are a leveraging machine.” We can provide additional funding to Nigeria and Africa.

“Nigeria and other African countries, in my opinion, require debt relief.” They can’t run up the hill with a sand-filled backpack.” According to Adesina.

Major Factors Influencing dollars to naira today black market

Here are some of the reasons for the dollars-to-naira exchange rate decline.

Inflation Rates: Inflation is well understood to have a direct impact on black market exchange rates. If the Nigerian economy can be stabilised and inflation is brought under control, the naira will benefit; however, if the naira continues to fall, it could indicate that food and other necessities are becoming more expensive on a daily basis.

Interest Rates: Another tool to keep an eye on is interest rates. If the interest rate at which banks lend money rises, the economy will contract and the naira’s value will fall.

Government Debt:

National debt can have an impact on investor confidence and, as a result, the flow of funds into the economy. If capital inflows are significant, the naira exchange rate will rise in its favour.

Speculators: Speculators frequently influence the naira and USD exchange rates. They hoard money in the hope of making a profit, causing the naira to plummet even further.

Conditions of Trade: Despite the fact that Nigeria currently has a trade deficit, favourable trade terms will cause the naira to appreciate against the dollar. Everything is supplied by China, India, and the majority of Asian countries.

In Nigeria, there is no uniform us dollars to naira exchange rate.
