UNILAG to Close Down Tomorrow Over Resurgence of COVID-19

Following the reappearance of COVID-19 on the university campus, the management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has ordered the institution’s closure commencing tomorrow.

An emergency Senate meeting on Wednesday came to this resolution.

According to the ICIR, students have been told to pack their belongings and leave the halls of residence by 12 p.m. on July 15, 2021.

With effect from July 26th, 2021, the Senate approved that the remaining semester’s lectures be given virtually.

As of the time of writing, calls to UNILAG Spokesperson Nonye Oguama were not answered or returned.

A potential third wave of the coronavirus has hit the university, according to a statement posted on the university’s website on Tuesday.

“The University of Lagos Medical Centre wishes to inform all members of the University of Lagos Community about what looks to be the beginning of a probable third wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Lagos State,” the statement read.

“The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu, stated in a press statement issued on July 11, 2021, that there has been a sharp increase in the number of daily confirmed cases since the beginning of July, with the test positivity rate increasing from 1.1 percent at the end of June 2021 to 6.6 percent as of July 8, 2021. In the same time, the occupancy rate at Lagos State’s isolation centres is increasing.

“This probable third wave has had an impact on the University of Lagos community, with an increase in the number of patients presenting to the University of Lagos Medical Centre with flu-like symptoms similar to COVID-19.

“The Medical Centre hereby assures all members of the University community that, in response to this potential threat in our community, all essential procedures in accordance with Federal and Lagos State Government rules have been taken.
