Court sentences King for Trafficking

Flourish King Ita, 38, was sentenced to prison for people trafficking by a Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

On Thursday, May 19, 2022, Hon. Justice Toyin Adegoke sentenced King Ita to one year in prison.

The defendant was charged with selling a baby and being an accessory to the sale of her own baby, according to a statement released by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which offences run counter to the provisions of Section 21 and Section 13 (4) (c) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

In her decision, Hon. Adegoke stated that the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, and thus found the defendant guilty of the charges.

She then found the defendant guilty and sentenced her to one year in prison and a fine of N500,000.

The defendant pled not guilty at his arraignment on December 6, 2021, and the trial began immediately.
