Court sentenced to 12-month psychiatric care

As a result of her conviction for creating a false kidnapping claim, Miss Ameerah Sufyan was given a 12-month psychiatric term by a Magistrate Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

On June 14, Miss Sufyan reported via Twitter that she and 16 other women had been abducted by men dressed in military uniforms.

According to the authorities, an inquiry revealed that Miss Sufyan’s allegation was untrue and that she had been receiving treatment for mental health concerns at a hospital in Lagos, from which she had posted on Twitter.

Ameerah Sufyan was charged on a single count of deceiving the police, which is a violation of Section 140 of the Penal Code, and was arraigned on Wednesday.

When the charge was read to Miss. Ameerah Sufyan, she entered a plea of guilty. James Idachaba, the prosecutor, then presented a medical report that showed the defendant was dealing with a mental illness when she made the false kidnapping claim.

Following the defendant’s admission of guilt, Idachaba requested the court to find her guilty but to impose a non-custodial sentence in accordance with Section 44 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

The prosecutor also requested that the court put her under the care of the Police Counseling Unit so that her mental health may be regularly assessed.

The defendant was found guilty by Magistrate Chukwuemeka Nweke after the defendant’s defence attorney, Chinyere Moneme, concurred with the prosecutor. Nweke then ordered the defendant’s conditional release to a female police probation officer named Hauwa Ibrahim, a deputy commissioner of police (DCP).

Ameerah Sufyan was also ordered by the Magistrate to receive 12-months of mental care under the supervision of a probation officer, during which she must also complete.
