Court sentences 2 students
Two Senior Secondary School (SSS 3) leavers, Udochukwu Anyanwu and Udo Chibike (also known as Lasis), were sentenced to seven years in prison each by a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, TBS, yesterday for breaking into a church and stealing a piano.
They were sentenced by Justice Yetunde Adesanya after they pled guilty to a plea bargain deal.
The judge ruled that their sentence would begin on January 19, 2017, the day they were first remanded in custody.

The offenders were first remanded in prison by a Lagos Magistrates Court on January 19, 2017, and were then charged and brought before Justice Yetunde Adesanya on June 27, 2018, on various counts of conspiracy to conduct a felony, namely rob and robbery, which they pleaded not guilty to.
The trial began on December 4, 2018, with Mrs. A. O. Oluwafemi, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution for Lagos State, calling three witnesses and presenting exhibits. However, on February 4, 2019, midway through the trial, Anyanwu and Chibike went through a trial within a trial, which the court dismissed after concluding that there was a prima facie case against them.
The prisoners chose a plea bargain deal when the case was heard on March 4, 2022, and the punishment was postponed until March 29, 2022.
Anyanwu and Chibike modified their not guilty plea to guilty after being re-arrested on a one-count amended charge of theft before Justice Adesanya yesterday.
“The court has ascertained from the defendants that they entered into the plea bargain agreement on their own free will, free of any coercion, and that no promises were made to them,” the judge added.
“I have considered the plea bargain and sentencing agreement between the parties, which was agreed to and duly executed.” I am convinced that the agreement’s conditions are fair.
“I hereby convict you, Udochukwu Anyanwu, and Udo Chibike of stealing, and you are found guilty as charged.”
