When a delegation of Igbo leaders met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja on November 19, 2021, led by former Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi, they requested Kanu’s unconditional release.

Despite the President’s description of their request as difficult, and despite the Nigerian leader’s declaration that interfering in Kanu’s trial would be illegal and contrary to the Judiciary’s powers, he promised to investigate their request.

“You’ve placed a very difficult demand on me as the leader of this country,” Buhari said. Your request has far-reaching consequences. Nobody could say I’ve confronted or interfered with the work of the judiciary in the last six years since I became President. God has blessed you with a clear mind and a sharp memory at this age. Half your age group is already perplexed. However, your request is quite substantial. “I’ll take it into account.”
