Soldiers apprehended him while he was reportedly on a charity mission to help the less fortunate in his community.

The Nigerian army stated in a statement that Agu was detained because he was inciting members of the public and soliciting support for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which is a banned organisation in the country (IPOB).

The Department of State Services (DSS) denies detaining Nigerians on the orders of powerful people.

In a statement on Friday, Monalisa Chinda Coker, director of communications for the Actors Guild of Nigeria, confirmed that Agu had been released from army custody before being taken into custody by the Department of State Services.

“#FREECHINWETALUAGU: I have heard that the lawless DSS has detained the Nollywood actor and transferred him to their Abuja office dungeon. They must free CHIWETALU as soon as possible! Sowore wrote on Facebook, “#Revolution Now #BuhariMustGo,” urging people to join the revolution.
