Late in the first half, ’s extra man paid off when Garry Rodrigues hooked a cross back towards goal, where it was nodded in by Tavares from close range.

With games against Cameroon and Burkina Faso still to come, an inspired Shanko kept Ethiopia in the game with a string of saves, but they created little in attack to trouble and already look set for an early exit.
