The Latest News in Nigeria is that Muhammadu Buhari has rejected state police for the second time.
Most states, he believes, will be unable to fund it.
He is also concerned that it will be misused.
Many Nigerians, including governors, have advocated for state police as a viable solution to the country’s escalating insecurity.
State police are also a key component of advocates of restructuring’s demand for power devolution.
Amotekun and Ebube Agu are two regional security outfits that have been adopted by some states.
The governors, on the other hand, are not permitted by the Constitution to be armed with sophisticated weapons.
President Buhari said that adopting state police is not a good idea right now because of the strained relationship between governors and local governments during an interview on Channels on Tuesday night.

He also expressed concerns that if the system were to be implemented as it is now, governors would be more likely to abuse it.
“State police is not an option,” the President said in response to a question.
“Learn more about the relationship between local governments and governors.”
“Does the third tier of government get what it is supposed to get under the law?”
“Are they getting it?” says the narrator.
“Let local government officials tell you the truth about the battle between local governments and the governor.”
President Buhari had previously voiced his opposition to the plan.
“I want the Nigerian Constitution to be consulted first and see what it says,” he said in a May 2018 interview.
“If it says they should be allowed, they should be allowed,” says the author.
“However, remember how many times we had to release money to states in the name of bailouts in order for them to pay their salaries?
“How many states can pay their employees on time?
“And you’re going to include the cops?” This is something that people should think about.
“I’m not convinced…
Will the states be able to take on the police’s responsibilities?
“You can’t just hand someone a gun and train him and then refuse to pay him; you know what will happen.”
