“When Jonathan came to power, the issue of corruption became heightened, and America took interest in the corruption in Nigeria, and they required someone who had zero-tolerance for corruption,” he stated in Abuja at a meeting with the Nigerians in Diaspora Association in South Africa.

“When the issue of Boko Haram grew very large (remember the Chibok girls? ), people forgot history very quickly.

“It was also on that basis that Jonathan lost the election and Buhari was elected president, for two reasons: (first) Buhari was going to jail all the corrupt people in Nigeria, as he did when he was the military head of state, and (second) he was going to stop Boko Haram – that was the situation at the time.”

“However, now, what is endangering Nigeria’s unity is the country’s polarisation,” he continued.

“As a result, Nigerians are looking for someone who can bring the country back together; they want an Igbo, Hausa, or Yoruba man.”

The lawmaker also urged restraint, emphasising the importance of avoiding retaliation.

“When Boko Haram first emerged, it killed more northerners in Nigeria than the Igbo and Yoruba combined, and they continue to do so today.

“They kill Muslims, Hausas – the Chibok girls are northerners, not Igbo girls. As a result, we’ve found ourselves in this situation.”
