President Buhari Makes Fresh Appointment

President Muhammadu Buhari led Government has come under strong criticism for it’s decision on Security outfits AK-47 rifles

President Muhammadu Buhari has faced criticism for his administration’s handling of the nation’s security concerns, which has been characterized as using double standards.

The President’s decision to permit a vigilante belonging to the Katsina State Government to carry AK-27 rifles reportedly for only five days of training raised concerns from the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), who also expressed concern that Amotekun Corps in South-West Nigeria has continued to be denied the same privilege.

In a statement issued by HURIWA and signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the organisation argued that the Buhari administration should have immediately authorized the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State to carry assault rifles, even if it were not for anything but for the June 5 terrorist attack in a Catholic church in Owo.

The rights group also criticized Garba Shehu, the President’s spokesperson, for upholding the inequity.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander, according to HURIWA, and no State in the nation is experiencing more terrorism or instability than the others.

Shehu had also stated that it is “illegal” for the governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, to outfit the Amotekun Corps with AK-47 rifles.

The defence of the presidential spokesman Garba Shehu, according to HURIWA, is weak and inappropriate because there are security issues throughout the entire nation and no area is completely safe.

The group demanded that other State-owned security organisations should have access to the same privileges granted to the Katsina State vigilantes.

“HURIWA is startled that President Muhammadu Buhari even initially rejected the notion of creating Amotekun, but the same President made no objections to the creation of civilian vigilantes in Katsina State.

The Amotekun in Ondo would like to receive the same AK-47 training if Garba Shehu is correct in his assertion that the vigilantes in Katsina were only trained to use it, HURIWA added.
