Unknown Gunmen have been killed in a gun duel with Owerri Police 

A police officer from the Imo State Police Command shot and killed a suspect gunman during a gun duel on the Owerri-Onitsha Road last Thursday.

Rabiu Hussaini, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Imo, revealed this on Saturday in a statement issued by Mike Abattam, the command’s spokesman.

The shootout happened at 3.01 p.m., he said, during a stop-and-search operation at a checkpoint on the Owerri-Onitsha Road.

“The ever gallant police command’s tactical teams were on a vigorous and aggressive stop-and-search operation along the Owerri/Onitsha Road, when suspected gunmen masquerading as persons mourning, going for a burial ceremony somewhere in the state, approached the police checkpoint in a convoy of three motorcycles carrying two passengers each, alongside a passenger bus with registration number Anambra NNE 725 ZG carrying passengers and displaying in front of the police checkpoint in a convoy of three.

The people were stopped for a routine search, according to him, and it was later discovered that they were carrying a belated burial poster on the bus, which piqued the cops’ interest.

“When the Police operatives saw the date on the poster, they became suspicious and alert.” They went to the bus after searching the passengers on the motorcycles and finding nothing incriminating. In an attempt to search the passengers on the bus, one of them pulled out a Beretta Pistol and attempted to shoot at the police officers, but he was neutralised, resulting in a shootout.

“One of the suspects, Odedira Ezuala, a 23-year-old native of Anambra State’s Umudike Ihiala LGA, was arrested during the process, while others, including the motorcyclists, escaped with bullet wounds.”

One Police Special Berretta Pistol with breach No.90005 and 10 rounds of live ammunition, one Bus with Reg. No. Anambra NNE 725 ZG, and one belated burial poster were among the items recovered, according to him.

“The body of the neutralised bandit has been deposited in the mortuary, while the arrested suspect is currently being interrogated and has provided police with a useful statement.” He has also offered to help the police apprehend his gang members who have escaped,” Hussaini added.
