Supercop Abba Kyari still under Suspension
The Police Service Commission (PSC) announced on Sunday that Abba Kyari, the embattled Commander of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), has been on suspension since July 31 following his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has not been reinstated.
According to reports, Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), had secretly recalled Kyari.
Mr. Austine Braimoh, a member of the PSC, told The Nation Newspaper that Kyari is still being investigated.
Kyari has not been reinstated, according to Braimoh, who also stated that the IGP can only make recommendations to the PSC on what steps to take while the commission has the final say on the matter.
“We are not aware,” he said. They must write to us if he is going to be reinstated. We put him on probation. We had to suspend him until he was cleared or indicted after the IGP wrote to us about what he did.
“We have yet to hear whether he has been cleared or indicted.” As a result, without an official report on him, the commission will be unable to reinstate him into service. IGP can make a recommendation to the commission, and we will now take action.”
In response to the development, the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, stated that the IGP cannot reinstate Kyari unilaterally.
“The Police Service Commission (PSC) has exclusive and statutory authority to exercise disciplinary control over officers of Abba Kiyari’s cadres, and all inquiries on reinstatement issues should be directed to PSC,” he said.
Kyari was being investigated for allegedly having a relationship with Abbas Ramon, also known as Hushpuppi, a suspected Internet fraudster.
Kyari allegedly conspired with Hushpuppi to defraud a Qatari businessman of $1.1 million, according to the FBI.
The IGP said Kyari had been questioned while speaking with State House correspondents in Abuja on Thursday, adding that the police were working closely with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Attorney General of the Federation to discharge the appropriate sanction on Kyari.
He also stated that the panel tasked with investigating the case had submitted its findings to the SGF, Boss Mustapha, for review and advice.
According to him, the police had just received feedback from the SGF and were debating their next course of action.
