They sat on the APC, waving to the crowd as the siren continued to blare, a scene both defiant and spectacular. The protesters mounted the vehicle but did not gain entry, according to a police source. The APC belongs to Mobile Police 1. Officers inside the vehicle succeeded in driving it to dismount protesters without incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mansur Hassan, explained what had happened, saying, “The protesters did not take over our APC; they only mounted it. The policemen in the APC had to use tactical display to get the protesters off so that they would not damage it, and it was returned safely.
This incident has been described as the height of growing tensions and unrest in the region. As a result of the protests, Governor Uba Sani has declared a curfew in the metropolis of Kaduna and Zaria, geared at calming the excesses of demonstrators and the restoration of order.
The curfew is to forestall further clashes between protesters and security operatives, with such factors considered to be critical towards ensuring safety of lives and property.
The security operatives monitor the demonstrations as the situation unfolds with a view to enforcing measures that would secure peace in Kaduna State.
