The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, fired a lecturer from the Department of English Language on Tuesday after he was found guilty of sexual harassment against a female student.
The University management dismissed Dr. Adebayo Mosobalaje of the English department on Tuesday.
The dismissal was approved by the institution’s Governing Council, according to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations officers, Abiodun Olanrewaju, a copy of which was forwarded to Ejes Gist News.
According to the release, the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has dismissed the lecturer who was found guilty of sexual demeanour against a female student, as part of the university’s stated commitment to rid the institution of any form of sexual intimidation, harassment, or coercion.
The full text of the statement is as follows:
“After deliberating extensively on the report of the Joint Committee of Council and Senate, which investigated the case of sexual harassment against Dr. Mosobalaje, the University Council unambiguously declared its zero tolerance for sexual harassment in any form or guise and, as a result, applied the appropriate University sanctions for such an offence as outlined in University regulation.
It will be recalled that the University Management formally launched an “anti-sexual harassment policy” almost two weeks ago, at which their excellencies, Erelu Bisi Fayemi (wife of Ekiti State Governor) and Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola (wife of Osun State Governor) presented papers, with Professor Yemisi Obilade, a former Vice-Chancellor of the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, as the keynote speaker.
Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding the “Zero tolerance policy” for sexual harassment and other social vices at several fora. The University Council, chaired by Owelle Oscar Udoji, has also stated that it will support policies that promote mutual coexistence among all members of the University Community.
The sacking of Adebayo Mosobalaje is a developing storey that will be updated as more information about the allegations becomes available.
