The Delta State Police Headquarters in Asaba was gutted by fire on Thursday, forcing police officers and tourists to flee for their lives.
Ejes Gist Nigeria report that, the incident was caused by an electrical spark in the Command control engine room, which damaged some gadgets as well as a portion of the building housing the device, especially the roof.
However, as of press time, the cause of the fire was unknown, but a reliable source said some brave police officers made an effort to save some important documents from the unit and other offices that shared the building with it.
However, a source who requested anonymity said that firefighters arrived as soon as they were notified to put out the fire.
The source stated that no lives were lost and that normalcy has since been restored.
“Today, 22nd April 2021, at about 1445 hours, there was a fire outbreak at the command control engine room,” said Acting Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Bright Edafe in a statement confirming the incident.
“The command would like to clarify that the fire only impacted a portion of the control room. The fire department was sent right away, and their quick response saved the situation.
“At this time, the fire has been extinguished. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is thought to have been caused by an electrical spark from the communication engine room.
“In the meantime, an investigation into the incident has begun. The Commissioner of Police advises the public to disregard any rumour that contradicts the facts mentioned above.”
