Bandits who attacked  Jos Correctional Centre in Plateau State are trapped

Security operatives to Jos correctional centre have subdued bandits who attacked the facility on Sunday afternoon.

In an attempt to force their way into the facility, the bandits engaged security officers in a gun battle.

The assailants were said to have pretended to be visitors and opened fire as they approached the correctional facility’s gate.

Five inmates who attempted to flee during the gun battle were quickly re-arrested, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

According to reports, the invasion was carried out to free some inmates.


There was still a gunfight going on at the time of filing this report, and security personnel had taken over major areas around the facility.

The majority of the bandits were trapped in the Correctional Centre, according to eyewitnesses, as joint security operatives from Operation Safe Haven surrounded the prison and its environs.

In a statement titled: Jos’ custodial centre attacked by gunmen, trapped in the yard, the Public Relations Officer of Correctional Centre, Francis Enobore, confirmed the attack, saying: “The medium-security custodial centre in Jos, Plateau state, came under attack by gunmen, who reportedly stormed the facility in large numbers with sophisticated weapons.

“The bandits allegedly arrived at the custodial centre around 17:20 hrs and proceeded to the main gate, where they engaged the armed squad personnel in a gun battle before breaking into the yard.”

” Despite gaining access to the yard, they are trapped inside because men from the sister security services were quickly dispatched to secure the perimeter wall and the entire area.

“At the same time, reinforcements from the service’s response squad have been dispatched to the centre.”

The attackers’ firepower had been subdued by superior fires from a combined team of security agencies, he said, and the situation was under control.
