High Court grants Sunday Igboho’s aides bail after 32 days in DSS cust.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to the 12 detained aides of Yoruba secessionist leader, Chief Sunday Igboho after they spent 32 days in the Department of State Services, DSS, detention facility in Abuja.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted the detainees bail in a recent ruling on their bail applications, which were filed and argued on their behalf by lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi.
The judge dismissed DSS lawyer Mr Idowu Awo’s concerns that some of the detainees would flee the country if granted bail, as their leader, Sunday Igboho, has done.
The detainees are entitled to bail under Nigerian law, according to Justice Egwuatu, because they have been held in custody for longer than the law allows.
According to the judge, the law even frowns on situations in which citizens’ liberty is stifled in illegal circumstances.
The suspects were granted bail under various conditions and will be held in DSS custody until their bail conditions are met.
