Governor Ben Ayade Decamps To APC

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers State has abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) (APC).

Governor Ayade announced his decision in a meeting with six APC governors who paid him a visit at Government House on Thursday morning.

Ejes Gist Nigeria gathered that  the APC delegation was led by Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni, who is also the chairman of the APC’s National Caretaker Committee.

Ben Ayade, the governor of Cross River State, says he joined the APC because of President Muhammadu Buhari’s nationalistic disposition and dedication to the country.

On Thursday, May 20, the Governor abandoned the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in favour of the ruling party, instructing all of his PDP colleagues, including members of the State House of Assembly, to do the same.

After a two-hour meeting with seven APC governors led by the party’s interim leader and governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, the governor formally declared for the ruling party at the Cross River State Executive Council Chamber, Governor’s Office in Calabar.

Asked why he joined the APC, Ayade cited President Muhammadu Buhari’s character traits and the realisation that Cross River, which has been economically emasculated since the ceding of its oil wells, needed to be in sync with the party in the centre as the key reasons for shifting.

“Having seen and known the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and his devotion to this country, his nationalistic disposition, and all of the efforts he has made to bring Nigeria to where we are today, it was evident that we needed to join hands with him at this moment to build a Nigeria that we can be proud of,” he remarked.

“We need all governors to understand that party affiliation is irrelevant.” It’s about integrity, character, and a commitment to the great nation’s goal. We must all work together to get ahead of the president by focusing on establishing a successful country so that the succession concerns of 2023 are not accompanied by the fears and concerns that the international community has for us. I believe that if all of us in the governorship join hands with Mr. President, we can sit at the same table and figure out how to run this country.” Added he.

Buni, who was overjoyed by the outcome, said he and his colleagues were in the state to officially welcome Governor Ayade to the APC.

“I am here to officially welcome His Excellency the Executive Governor of Cross River State to the APC on behalf of the APC family. He is the party’s leader in the state as of today.”

Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Solomon Lalong of Plateau State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Jigawa State, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State, and the Minister of State for Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylver, were among the other APC governors in attendance.

Members of the state house of assembly, certain National Assembly members, members of the Cross River State Executive Council, local government chairmen, councillors, and some stakeholders, including Dame Princess Florence Ita-Giwa and High Chief Asuquo Ekpenyong amon, were also present.

Meanwhile a committee set up by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has recommended a petrol price of between N408.5 per litre and N380 per litre.

The Governors, according to this online news outlet, urged for the fuel subsidy to be removed immediately during a virtual meeting on Wednesday, May 19.

Nasir El-Rufai, Chairman of the Committee and Governor of Kaduna State in northern Nigeria, said that the current subsidy policy was unsustainable because smugglers and underground marketplaces in neighbouring African countries benefited.

To safeguard the country’s economy, the committee suggested that subsidies be removed immediately.

Governor El-Rufai remarked that Nigeria, like other member countries of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, agreed to a production cut to keep prices high, but that Nigeria could not fully benefit from the regime due to subsidies.

“Between N70 billion and N210 billion is anticipated to be spent every month to keep gasoline prices at N162 per litre, which is below the cost price, and the remittance to the federal account will drop to less than N50 billion per month or even nothing if threats continue,” the Kaduna State Governor warned.
