Breaking: Former Nigerian presidential candidate is dead

Former presidential candidate Bashir Tofa has died.

After a long illness, Mr. died in the early hours of Monday at the age of 74.

Magaji Galadima (Kachallan Kano), a close associate of the deceased, announced his death on Facebook.

Mr. Tofa was the ’s (NRC) presidential candidate in the June 12, 1993 election, which was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most free.

Mr Tofa was born in Kano on June 20, 1947, and received his primary education at Shahuci Junior Primary School in Kano before continuing his education at Kano City Senior Primary School. He attended Kano Provincial College from 1962 to 1966.

From 1967 to 1968, he worked for Royal Exchange Insurance Company after finishing his studies at the Provincial school. He attended City of London College from 1970 to 1973.

Mr. Tofa’s political career began in 1976, when he was elected to the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Council. In 1977, he was elected to the Constituent Assembly as a member.

From 1967 to 1968, he worked for Royal Exchange Insurance Company after finishing his studies at the Provincial school. He attended City of London College from 1970 to 1973.

Mr. Tofa’s political career began in 1976, when he was elected to the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Council. In 1977, he was elected to the Constituent Assembly as a member.

Mr Tofa was the secretary of the Kano branch of the then ruling party, NPN, at various times during Nigeria’s Second Republic. He went on to become the party’s national financial secretary and a member of the Green Revolution National Committee at the national level.

He was a member of the Liberal Movement during the Third Republic, which later became the Liberal Convention after it was not registered as a political party. Mr. Tofa began his career at NRC in 1990.

Mr Tofa was elected as the NRC’s presidential candidate in 1993, when the Ibrahim Babangida administration implemented the Option A4 system. He won the NRC ticket by defeating Pere Ajunwa, John Nwodo, and Dalhatu Tafida in the party primaries. Sylvester Ugoh, a former governor of Biafra’s now-defunct central bank, was his election running mate at the time. Both were members of Nigeria’s defunct National Party (NPN).

Mr. Tofa was also an industrialist and a businessman. He was the chairman of Abba Othman and Sons Ltd. and the International Petro-Energy Company (IPEC). Impex Ventures, Century Merchant Bank, and General Metal Products Ltd were all on his board of directors.

Mr. Tofa, who is based in Kano, is known for publicly expressing his views on national issues.
