Rochas Okorocha, a former governor of the South-East state of Imo, has been arrested, according to PREMIUM TIMES.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained Mr Okorocha at his Unity House private office in Abuja about 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the matter.
After a five-hour standoff with EFCC operatives who had been following him to the venue, the former governor was arrested.
According to our sources, the anti-graft agency had invited the former governor to its Abuja headquarters many times in connection with numerous corruption allegations.
Mr Okorocha, who is now a senator, is said to have refused the invitation, which enraged detectives who fanned out to find him.
The politician is being questioned at the EFCC headquarters, and it is unknown if he will be able to return home today.
The charges against the senator are vague, but according to our sources, they are linked to alleged colossal corruption during his eight-year term as governor.
Mr Okorocha’s spokesman, Sam Onwuemeodo, could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.
Wilson Uwujaren, a spokesman for the EFCC, stated that the former governor is in his agency’s custody when contacted.
When asked for more information about the accusations against the politician, he remained silent.
Mr Okorocha has been at odds with his successor, Governor Hope Uzodinma, since he left office in 2019. Governor Uzodinma has accused him of misgovernance and corruption during his tenure. Both men are members of Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former governor was arrested by the police on February 21 for breaking the seal on a hotel owned by his wife but closed bPy the Imo State government. He was eventually released.
Lasberry Anyanwu, a former commissioner who served under Mr Okorocha, was arraigned by the EFCC’s zonal office in Enugu in November 2020. He was charged with stealing and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N180 million.
