Femi Adesina has revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari will assent to the Electoral Bill in a matter of hours.
Adesina disclosed this on Channels TV ‘Sunrise Daily’ interview.
President Muhammadu Buhari could sign the reworked Electoral Bill any moment from now, the Presidency has said.
It did say, however, that the President would not be harassed into signing the bill into law by special interests.
Femi Adesina, President Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, argued that Buhari’s assent was still within the Constitution’s 30-day deadline.
“You know, before the President puts pen to paper on any legislation, particularly this one that has to do with our electoral fortunes, it has to be looked at and looked at,” Adesina said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily – a breakfast program – on Tuesday.
He’ll have to buy opinions from various stakeholders, and once he’s satisfied that the necessary due diligence has been completed and he won’t make any mistakes, he’ll sign it, and believe me when I say that Nigerians will hear about this bill within hours.
“He (Buhari) is going to sign it (the bill) right now.” It could happen today, tomorrow, or at any time within the next 30 days.
“It could be signed today, tomorrow, or next week.” It only took a few hours, not days. Hours could be 24, 48, or even 72 hours; days and weeks are not possible.”
In a statement released on Monday, the presidential spokesman warned against playing cheap politics over the President’s alleged delay in signing the Electoral Bill.
In the statement, Adesina accused some interest groups of profiting from the perceived delay to incite civil unrest.
