Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina, the former Chairman of the disbanded Pension Reform Task Team, PRTT, was convicted and sentenced to eight years in jail for money laundering by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

Ejes Gist News reports the court found Maina guilty on all 12 counts brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against him and his company, Common Input Property and Investment Limited, in a judgement delivered by Justice Okon Abang.

According to this online daily, Justice Abang ruled that the anti-graft agency had successfully established the key elements of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.



He ruled that the sentence would begin on October 25, 2019, and would run consecutively.

The court ordered Maina and his firm to return to the Federal roughly N2.1 billion that was tracked to their bank accounts, following which it ordered the company to be wound up.

It also ordered the forfeiture to the of Maina’s two prized properties in Abuja’s Lifecamp and Jabi districts, as well as the auction of a bulletproof automobile and a BMW 5 series car discovered in the convict’s possession.

Despite the fact that the statute provided for a maximum sentence of 14 years, Justice Abang stated he was moved by Maina’s pleading for mercy.
