An Appeal Court Judge has fled a kidnapping; his driver is missing.
Justice Rita Pemu, the presiding judge of the Court of Appeal, Owerri Division, is said to have escaped being kidnapped by hoodlums.
On Monday, Chinedu Agu, Secretary of the Nigeria Bar Association, Owerri Branch, revealed this.
Official cars and personal belongings of the judge, according to Agu, the judge’s driver, were still missing.
The near-fatal accident occurred in Owerri on Monday afternoon along the Azia-Orsumoghu-Ihiala road.
Pemu is said to have escaped the kidnappers, who were unable to identify her, and was whisked away amid heavy gunshots.
“The presiding justice of the Court of Appeal, Owerri Division, Hon. Justice Rita Pemu, escapes from the snares of kidnappers,” reads the statement in its entirety.
“On Sunday, February 20, 2022, at about 11 a.m., the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal was kidnapped while traveling to Owerri from Benin City along the Azia-Orsumoghu-Ihiala Road by kidnappers.”
“The Secretariat gathered that the Kidnappers double-crossed His Lordship’s vehicle at a Speed Break, disembarking her and ordering her to lie prostrate on the road, while pointing guns menacingly on her head, when the Chairman of the Bar, J.I. Ogamba, and the Secretary, Chinedu Agu, paid His Lordship a visit at 5pm today.”
“The Kidnappers mistook Justice Pemu, who was dressed in a simple, spartan, and free-flowing gown and was in her Hiace Bus instead of her SUV, for one of “oga’s stewards,” as they kept demanding to know in which car their “oga” was.
“While she was being matched into a dense forest, one of the kidnappers boasted to the Secretariat that if he had been there, he would have wasted their oga.”
“Gunshots and concomitant cries of anguish pervaded the bush as his Lordship was matched into the bush-like a death-destined Sheep to the slaughter, heightening her apprehension.”
“As the kidnappers backed out for his Lordship to continue the Golgotha walk into the depths of the bush, where she might meet the same fate as others, she detoured and sought safety elsewhere, and was hurried back to Orlu town in disguise, from where she found her way into Owerri.”
“His Lordship’s official cars, her driver, and her personal property inside the car have yet to be found as of the time of this report.”
“As we condemn the recent spate of kidnappings and the state’s unsettling high level of insecurity, we give thanks to God for Hon. Justice Rita’s life.”
