The Three likely implications of Alaafin of Oyo  Oba Lamidi Olayiwola death on Oyo politics

Alaafin’s demise has repercussions for Oyo State politics, the most likely of which are as follows:

1. Politicians in Oyo town have been liberated from Alaafin’s sway. Oba Adeyemi held sway over politics in the ancient town until he joined his ancestors. His vested interests influenced election outcomes. This influence has aided his children in the past in participating in and winning elections. For instance, one of his sons, Hon. Akeem Adeyemi, is serving his second term in the House of Representatives as a member representing the Oyo Federal Constituency.

He previously served as caretaker chairman of the Atiba Local Government under his father’s direct supervision. One of his daughters also served as a commissioner in the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s administration.

2. Governor Makinde now has the ability to spread his wings wider. Governor Seyi Makinde and Oba Adeyemi had no love lost during the former’s three years as Governor, despite the fact that both of them braved it in public. For example, Makinde has chosen candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives who are not well-known in their respective districts. If the monarch had lived until the election period, the next election would have been difficult for the candidates in Oyo. After the death of Oba Adeyemi, the Governor will be free to establish his political dominance in the ancient town.

3. Certain Oke-Ogun chiefs and monarchs who were subjected to Alaafin’s dominance will strategize for greater independence from subsequent Alaafins. Oba Adeyemi, as the consenting authority for the majority of obas in the Oke-Ogun area of the State, insisted on the supremacy of tradition and authority, which did not sit well with some chiefs and obas. Additionally, his grip reportedly compelled him to direct certain obas to deliver their communities to specific political parties during elections. Such chiefs and obas will almost certainly take steps to protect themselves from future Alaafins.
