10 Unical lecturers have died amidst the on going ASUU strike
Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that ten academic staff members have passed away since the ASUU strike started on February 14, 2022, according to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Calabar Branch.
Dr. John Edor, the chairman of the ASUU UNICAL Branch, revealed this to our Calabar-based correspondent on Thursday.
Although Edor withheld information about the reasons of the lecturers’ deaths, others have suggested that a shortage of funding for medical care was to blame.
However, Dr. Edor made the names of the lecturers and the courses they taught public.
The names are Prof. E. O. Udosen in biochemistry; Dr. Mrs. Iquo Takon in microbiology; Profs. G. U. Ntamu and Judith Otu in sociology; Prof. Victor Ibianwu in physics; Profs. Offiong Abia and Catherine Agbor in history and international studies; Profs. Augustine Bassey and Ita Esuabana in mathematics; and Prof. Chinyere Okam in theatre and media studies
The federal government withheld the professors’ pay for the seven-month period, and ASUU went on strike to emphasize their demand for greater welfare, among other things.
