1 Dead, Multi-Billion Naira Goods Burnt As Traders, Okada Riders Clash In Abuja

Following the murder of an unnamed lady, goods worth billions of naira were burned at the renowned Furniture Market in Dei-Dei, a suburb of Abuja, on Wednesday, when Igbo traders clashed with motorcyclists known as Okada riders.

According to Simon Moses, a market trader, the incident began when a Hausa okada rider collided with a trailer, instantly killing the lady passenger.

He went on to say that the Igbo traders and the Hausa okada riders began fighting, and the situation developed into the burning of the motorcycle involved in the accident, while the hausa motorcyclists mobilized to assault the furniture marketers’ warehouses, destroying products worth billions of Naira.

Meanwhile, FCT Police spokesperson DSP Josephine Adeh said the return of peace in the region was due to the command’s comprehensive deployment of tactical and intelligence assets led by Commissioner of Police, CP Babaji Sunday.

The teams were dispatched quickly to the location to guarantee that the unrest was contained and managed, preventing the destruction of private and government assets, the loss of lives and property, and restoring normalcy to the situation, according to the police.

“As a result of the foregoing, the police, in concert with other state apparatus, managed the uproar upon arrival at the scene, preventing further disintegration of law and order,” she stated.

“In addition to the foregoing, police monitoring and surveillance are ongoing to determine the cause of the outbreak of violence, maintain the relative peace restored, and confirm the extent of the damage.”


“Furthermore, members of the public are urged to refrain from spreading unverified information about the incident, which could reignite the extinguished flame of violence.”
