Borno State Celebrated Independence day for the first time in 12 years of Insurgency 

The 62nd anniversary of Nigeria’s independence was celebrated on Saturday by the government of Borno State with a parade, the first in the 12-year period since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency, Ejes Gist Newspaper reports.

The ceremony was done in Maiduguri’s Ramat Square, under the direction of Governor Babagana Zulum.

According to him, the event was made possible by the state’s restoration to a largely peaceful state.

Alhaji Usman Kadafur, who served as Zulum’s deputy, praised the military and other security services for their exceptional performance in a number of operations against the rebels.

The governor said that the state government’s closure of all displaced people’ camps in Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Areas was made possible by the effectiveness of the anti-terror campaign.

He clarified that the majority of the refugees voluntarily went back to their cities and communities.

The governor stated that the government’s main goal was to reconstruct vital infrastructure that had been devastated during the 12-year conflict.

“We reaffirm our dedication to addressing the problems of crucial infrastructure that has been devastated by the ten-year Boko Haram conflict.

“And look at ways to provide our hordes of unemployed youths jobs, reducing the rise of social vices in society in the process.

With the significant investments we have made over the past three years to enhance and expand our resettlement and recovery effort, he continued, “We remain convinced that we will succeed in our pledge to give the benefits of democracy.

In order to improve livelihoods and community economic growth, he promised to offer essential services to the populace.

“We have a responsibility to increase job creation, access to education, healthcare delivery services, security, and the supply of drinkable water for both human and animal consumption, among other things, in order to achieve our policy objective on a sustainable basis.

As the general elections in 2023 drew near, he urged the populace to stay unified, live peaceably, and avoid any tendencies that could throw the country into disorder and anarchy.

A detachment of police officers led the march, and a medals parade was also organized to honour the officers and soldiers of Operation Hadin Kai who participated in the war against insurgency.
