, a founding member of the and an elder statesman, has stated that he will support Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, in his presidential bid in 2023.

On Wednesday, Tinubu paid a visit to the elder statesman at his Abuja home.

The ex-governor of Lagos was at Yakasai’s Abuja residence on Saturday, according to Saturday PUNCH, to solicit his support for Tinubu’s presidential bid in the next general elections.

Posters and billboards promoting Tinubu’s rumoured presidential bid have recently been seen in major cities such as Lagos and Abuja. Tinubu was the governor of Lagos from May 1999 to May 2007.

Even though Tinubu has yet to declare his intention to run for any office in 2023, there have been reports and hints that he may be interested in the exalted position.

In October, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu launched the South-West Agenda 2023, a political movement aimed at rallying support for Tinubu’s presidential bid in 2023.

Tinubu, who turned 69 in March 2021 and has a sizable political following, has been rumoured to be eyeing a presidential run in 2023, even as political debates over a southern president intensify following the eight-year tenure of the incumbent, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of Katsina State, North-West Nigeria.

Between July and October 2021, while Tinubu was in the United Kingdom for knee surgery and physiotherapy, over 50 politicians visited him at his London home, including the President, six governors, dozens of senators, and members of the House of Representatives.

The Northern Caucus of the House of Representatives, led by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase, paid Tinubu a get-well visit in London in October and declared support for his rumoured presidential bid in 2023.

Yakasai, who is 96 years old, told Saturday PUNCH Friday that he has chosen two politicians to support the presidency in 2023.

He, on the other hand, stated that he has no plans to enter politics, but that he has the constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice.

“I don’t want to join any (political) party,” Yakassai said when asked if he planned to join the ruling party after Tinubu’s visit. “However, I can support a candidate of my choice.” I stated in 1951 that I would not join a political party but would support a candidate of my choice.”

“He (Tinubu) just came to visit me but I have two of them (presidential aspirants) that I have earmarked right from the beginning and I made a vow that any one of them who came to ask for my support first is the person I would support,” the elder statesman said of the APC leader’s visit. Tinubu is the first person who comes to mind.”

“He (Tinubu) did and he asked for my support,” Yakasai said when asked if Tinubu told him he would run for President in 2021.

Yakasai, on the other hand, claims that he did not tell Tinubu during the visit that he would support his ambition.

He also stated that interested candidates must first clear the hurdles of their respective political parties’ primary elections, “then we will begin to compare them.”
