Binance restricts 281 crypto-accounts owned by Nigerians amid fraud crackdown

As part of an international law enforcement crackdown on fraudulent activities, over 280 accounts held by Nigerians on Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency platform, have been restricted.

Ejes Gist News reported earlier this week that some Nigerians took to Twitter to protest the “#BinanceStopTheScam” hashtag after being unable to access their accounts.

Some of the complainants claimed that Binance had seized their fiat currency by locking them out of their accounts, with the majority claiming that they had been denied access for more than three months.

Binance founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao responded to the scam claim in a Website post on Saturday, saying that the platform was forced to restrict the accounts due to an international investigation.

281 Nigerian accounts were affected, according to his statement, with 38 percent of these cases being restricted at the request of international law enforcement.

Ripples Nigeria previously reported four reasons for Binance’s ability to block or lock accounts without prior notice to users, one of which is a restriction demand from a law enforcement agency or a court.

A total of 79 cases have been resolved out of the total number of people affected. This comes after Binance asked users to fill out a complaint form in order to resolve the problem.

“Protection mechanisms like KYC, anti-money laundering measures, collaboration with law enforcement, and account restrictions are in place to ensure our community remains safe and fraudulent activity is avoided,” Zhao said. This is a global strategy that is implemented in every country.

“These personal account restrictions have impacted 281 Nigerian accounts, with approximately 38% of these cases restricted at the request of international law enforcement.”
