Nigeria sold $394.03bn worth of oil in 10 years.

According to the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), the total aggregate financial flows from the oil and gas sector to the Nigerian government’s account totaled $394.029 billion over a ten-year period.

This was revealed in NEITI’s most recent annual report, which was published on its website on Monday.

The remittance to the government account occurred from 2011 to 2020, according to the report.

Tuesday 8th March 2022

According to NEITI, oil companies remitted $14.65 billion to the account in 2020, accounting for 71.17 percent of total earnings.

However, according to the NEITI report, revenue fell by 40% in the year under review, compared to the $34.22 billion generated by the sector in 2019.

In addition, 51 oil and gas companies owe the federal government $3.17 billion, according to the report.

Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, the NEITI’s Executive Secretary, said that companies’ liabilities to the Federation as of ‘December 31st 2020 were N1.32 trillion or $3.17 billion, compared to the N2.6 trillion owed in 2019.’

The current debts, he explained, are collectible revenues due to the Federation from the Department of Petroleum Resources and the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

The report also detailed the revenue streams that were used to cover the liabilities in question. These include, among others, royalties on oil and gas, concession rentals, Petroleum Profit Tax, Company Income Tax, Education Tax, Value Added Tax, and Withholding Tax.

“NEITI’s brave public disclosure of companies’ liabilities to the Federation was in line with its national mandate and in fulfilment of its obligation as a member of the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), not in any way against the companies,” Orji added.

‘NEITI’s disclosure aims to draw oil and gas companies’ attention to their obligations to remit all revenues due to the government, particularly at a time when the government is in desperate need of funds to rebuild the country’s infrastructure and improve the investment climate.

“As a result, NEITI will continue to support the companies and expect them to meet their obligations to the Federation in terms of payment of taxes, royalties, and levies, just as they do in other jurisdictions where they operate.”
