Meanwhile, Nigeria’s total currency in circulation reached an all-time high of N3.33 trillion in 2021.

This is an N418 billion increase from December 2020’s N2.91 trillion, as well as a 19.06 percent increase from 2.44 trillion in 2019.

This was stated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in its money and credit statistics, which were published on the CBN’s website.

The total amount of physical cash represented in paper or coins used to conduct transactions in Nigeria is known as the currency in circulation.

It also represents the cash that has been taken out of the CBN net.

It also includes cash in commercial banks’ vaults that is ready to be paid out to customers who want to withdraw money.

“The growth in CIC reflected the continued dominance of cash in the economy,” the CBN said in its report on currency operations.

“In terms of volume and value, the higher denomination banknotes accounted for 63.47 percent and 98.08 percent of the total CIC, respectively.”

“As of end-December 2020, the volume of lower denomination banknotes (N5, N10, N20, N50) accounted for 28.43% of the total CIC and 1.92 percent in terms of value.”
