Oil nears $140, highest since 2008 as NNPC announces 21 pipelines vandalised.

Oil prices continued to rise on Monday morning, reaching $140, the highest level since Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s presidency.

Brent was trading as high as $139.13 per barrel at 5 a.m., according to Reuters data, before falling to $127 per barrel.

Similarly, the U.S. oil benchmark, West Texas Intermediate crude futures, jumped to $12605 per barrel.

Oil prices have risen to their highest level since July 2008, as the United States and its allies consider banning Russian oil imports, a move that would “further isolate Russia from the global economy.”

“Our bill would prohibit the import of Russian oil and energy products into the United States, end normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus, and take the first step toward barring Russia from joining the World Trade Organization.” “We’d also give the Executive Branch the authority to raise tariffs on Russian imports,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) reported a N37.50 billion trading surplus in September 2021.

This is a 352 percent increase from the surplus of N8.29 billion in August 2021.

The increase in trading surplus was largely due to increased earnings of NNPC’s Upstream subsidiary, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, according to details in the September 2021 NNPC Monthly Financial and Operations Report (MFOR) (NPDC).
