Northern Muslims have set Bishop Kukah’s house on fire in Sokoto.
Following today’s violent protest in Sokoto, the Holy Family Catholic Cathedral, Bishop Kukah’s House, and Catholic Pastoral Centre, which cost over N1 billion Naira to construct, were set on fire by hoodlums protesting the arrest of those responsible for the murder of Miss Deborah Samuel Yakubu.
Thugs have destroyed the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, which is led by Bishop Matthew Kukah.
According to pictures and videos shared online, the diocese’s secretariat, St Bakhita, was set ablaze during demonstrations calling for the release of Deborah Samuel’s murder suspects.
The church along Aliyu Jodi Road was the same building claimed to have been burned down by raging thugs, according to the videos geolocated by Ejes Gist Newspaper.
It was unclear whether the church was set on fire because of Mr Kukah’s statement condemning Ms Samuel’s heinous murder or if the thugs struck at random.
Mr Kukah told Newsmen he was on his way out of Sokoto when contacted. The bishop’s end of the call had a windy background, which confirmed he was on the move.
At the time of filing this report, the Gazette was unable to independently verify whether the revered religious leader was being smuggled out of the state for his safety.
The police spokesman in Sokoto declined to comment on the destruction of St Bakhita.
Witnesses said the attackers regrouped after the police vans left the neighbourhood after firing tear gas to disperse protesters from breaking into the church earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Governor Aminu Tambuwal has declared curfew in Sokoto to prevent further outbreaks of violence following a mob outrage over the murder suspects of Ms Samuel.
Ms Samuel, a Shehu Shagari College of Education 200-level home economics student, was killed around 9:00 a.m. on Thursday for allegedly criticising Prophet Muhammad.
Her assassination has sparked outrage across the country, with political and religious leaders calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of all suspects.
