Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested in 2015, but he disappeared entirely in April 2017 while on bail. He reappeared in Israel more than a year later.

During his absence, his social media posts infuriated the government, which claimed that his comments sparked attacks on security forces in southeastern Nigeria.

After detaining him in an undisclosed country, security agents brought him before a court in Abuja on June 29. In Kenya, he was allegedly detained and mistreated, according to his lawyer. The East African country, on the other hand, has denied any involvement.

Bianca urged Buhari to consider the plea made by some Igbo leaders during their recent visit to the State House, Abuja, asking for Kanu’s release during the 10th year memorial lecture in honor of her late husband, which was held in Owerri, the Imo state capital, on Friday.

Kanu’s release, she claims, will demonstrate Buhari’s magnanimity, noting that the call for secession is a direct result of perceived inequity in resource distribution and political appointments in the country.

“Kanu’s release will bolster President Buhari’s commitment to healing the wounds caused by the Igbo nation’s sense of marginalization,” she said.

He has appeared in court twice since June. His next court appearances are scheduled for January 19 and 20, 2022.
