Recall that on the night of Monday, July 19, Benin security authorities detained Igboho and his wife in neighbouring Cotonou on orders from Nigeria, as the activist was purportedly going to travel to Germany with his German-born wife.
Despite the Federal Government’s insistence that he be extradited to Nigeria to face claims of weapons hoarding and activities that harm the country, Igboho’s legal team has successfully challenged the Benin government in court.
Despite intense pressure from Nigeria, the Benin Republic allegedly stated on Wednesday, July 21, that it would not participate in any process that went against due process.
“The Nigerian government intended to extradite him on Wednesday, but our government stated that the rule of law must be observed because the entire world is watching.” The PUNCH was told by a Benin security official.
“Benin Republic has demonstrated itself to be a country that respects the rule of law and due process,” Pelumi Olajengbesi, one of Igboho’s lawyers, told PUNCH, adding that “Igboho’s legal team in the Benin Republic was in talks with the Beninese administration.”
