Augsburg vs Bayern Munich News

Borussia Dortmund will try to keep pace with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich when they host Stuttgart on Saturday, despite the absence of star striker Erling Braut Haaland due to a persistent hip injury.

Dortmund currently trail Bayern Munich by four points in the table, a gap that could widen to seven if Bayern win at Augsburg on Friday.

This will be Dortmund’s sixth match without Haaland, and chances of him returning before their league showdown with Bayern Munich at home in two weeks are dwindling.

Dortmund’s form has been inconsistent without Haaland, culminating in a 2-1 loss to RB Leipzig before the international break.

Dortmund’s attack will be led by club captain Marco Reus and Dutch striker Donyell Malen, with the hosts knowing they can’t afford another slip-up against Stuttgart if they want to challenge Bayern.

“We have to be incredibly consistent and ready when they (Bayern) falter,” Reus told Sport1.de.

After recovering from injuries, Raphael Guerreiro, Emre Can, and Mahmoud Dahoud could all return.

Dortmund wants to forget about the 5-1 thrashing they received from Stuttgart last December at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund fired former coach Lucien Favre after Congolese striker Silas Katompa Mvumpa scored twice in the rout for Stuttgart.

It’s also a warm-up for Dortmund’s Champions League match against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, which they must win to advance to the last 16.

Leipzig will be without injured striker Yussuf Poulsen for Saturday’s match against Hoffenheim.

After Poulsen tore a calf muscle while with the Danish team, Leipzig coach Jesse Marsch said, “That was the worst news for us during the international break.”

Tensions will be high in the capital for Saturday’s derby between Union Berlin and Hertha Berlin.

Despite rising Covid-19 numbers in Germany, a capacity crowd of 22,000 is expected, and only fully vaccinated or recovered supporters will be allowed to attend.

“It’s great to have a full stadium; the atmosphere will be fantastic, but you have to keep in mind that the numbers are rapidly increasing again at the moment,” Hertha defender Niklas Stark admitted.

Since Union’s promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019, this is only the fifth time the two clubs have met in Germany’s top flight.

When the clubs last met in east Berlin in April of last year, it ended in a 1-1 draw.

Genki Haraguchi is a player to keep an eye on.

Union’s Japan midfielder faces Hertha Berlin, who have been in excellent form since switching from the wing to attacking midfield.

“He’s one of the season’s early winners,” Union CEO Oliver Ruhnert said.

Haraguchi regained his confidence in the second tier at Hanover after struggling on the wing at Hertha and is thriving in a more central role at Union, which he joined in July.

In wins over Moenchengladbach and Wolfsburg, a home defeat to Bayern Munich, and a draw with Cologne, his box-to-box energy and slick passes resulted in four goals.

He made brief appearances in Japan’s victories over Oman and Vietnam during the international break.

“He’s like the Duracell bunny in that he always gives his all,” Ruhnert added.
