African Union Condemns Zamfara Killings, Demands Release of Abducted Women and Children

The African Union (AU) has condemned the killing of more than 50 civilians and the abduction of women and children during coordinated attacks in Zamfara State, Northwestern Nigeria.

In a statement published on its official website, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said he “strongly condemns the heinous and coordinated terrorist attacks perpetrated on February 21, 2026, in Zamfara State,” which resulted in “the killing of more than 50 civilians and the abduction of women and children.”

Ejes Gist News reports that the AU described the attacks as grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security and stability on the continent.

AU Reaffirms Support for Nigeria

The continental body stated that it “unequivocally rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly women and children.”

Youssouf expressed the AU’s “full solidarity with the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” extended condolences to bereaved families, and wished injured victims a swift recovery.

He reaffirmed the union’s “unwavering support for Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity and restore lasting peace,” underscoring the AU’s commitment to collective security across member states.

Call for Immediate Release of Abductees

The AU Chairperson called for the “immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted women and children.” He also urged strengthened coordination among security actors to prevent recurrence.

According to local accounts, the attack occurred in Dutsin Dan Ajiya village, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State. Residents said armed assailants stormed the community late at night, reportedly blocking access roads before opening fire.

A resident told reporters that the attackers used sophisticated weapons and shot at villagers attempting to flee. Initial casualty figures cited 30 fatalities, though subsequent assessments indicated that the death toll exceeded 50. Several residents were also abducted during the raid, which reportedly lasted until the early hours of the following day.

Zamfara State has faced recurring attacks attributed to armed groups, with rural communities frequently targeted. Security agencies have yet to release a detailed operational update regarding the latest incident.
