Presidential Candidates to Sign peace agreement Ahead of 2023 General Elections 

As the campaign season for the 2023 presidential election starts, the presidential candidates, Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Bola Tinubu, Rabiu Kwankwaso and others will soon sign a peace agreement.

When the Peace Agreement would be signed

A letter from the National Peace Committee says that the agreement will be signed by the candidates, their parties, and their spokespeople on Thursday, September 29.

In January 2023, before the election, the candidates will sign another agreement. The NPC says this is to help keep peace and unity during the election process.

Before the general elections in 2023, the National Peace Committee has asked the presidential candidates, their parties, and their spokespeople to sign a peace agreement.

What is the Aim of the Peace Agreement 

The goal is to make sure that the presidential candidates and their parties run peaceful campaigns based on issues.

On Thursday, September 15, in Abuja, a letter was sent to the candidates, their parties, and the people who spoke for them.

Where would the Agreement signing take place

The letter said that it would be held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja on September 29.

The invitation letter was signed by the chairman of the committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (ret.). He said that the peace agreement will be signed twice before the general elections.

What is the Usefulness of the Agreement 

The first agreement is to make sure that political parties “conduct their campaigns both online and offline in a peaceful manner, devoid of ethnic, religious and hateful rhetoric that will incite violence and further aggravate the growing tension in the nation.”

In January 2023, the second peace agreement will be signed.

Part of the letter said, “These interventions are meant to add to the ongoing peace initiatives that aim to promote a peaceful and inclusive election process before, during, and after the final election results are announced.”
