The federal government has reversed its earlier directive to vice chancellors, chairmen of governing councils, and provosts of public universities to reopen the schools for academic purposes.

Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that the National Universities Commission, NUC, announced the withdrawal in a circular issued Monday evening.

“Re: Forwarding of Court Judgment and Enforcement of Order by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) in Suit No.NICN/ABJ/270/2022.: Withdrawal of Circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135,” read the circular with the reference number: “NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135.”

“I have been directed to withdraw the National Universities Commission (NUC) circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol64/135, ad dated 23rd September 2022 on the above subject,” said Mr Sam Onazi, NUC Director, Finance and Accounts, on behalf of the commission’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed. As a result, the circular has been withdrawn.

“Please take note, all pro-chancellors and chairmen of Governing Councils, as well as vice-chancellors of federal universities.” All relevant stakeholders would be kept up to date on future developments and information.

“Please accept the Executive Secretary’s heartfelt greetings.”

According to a source, the withdrawal of the directive was not uncontested by the appeal against the National Industrial Court of Nigeria’s decision.

According to reports, the NUC was reminded of its action because the Academic Staff Union of Universities, through its legal team, had filed an appeal against the court’s decision.

According to the source, the commission was also reminded that the defendant had successfully obtained a stay of execution of the court’s decision ordering it to resume work.

Despite the ASUU strike, FG will reopen varsities.
