ASUU Strike: ASUU Replies FG on its Recent  Order to Open Universities,  says FG not talking to us

The vice chancellors of the country’s public universities have been ordered to reopen the institutions so that academic activities can resume, but the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, has called the federal government’s bluff on the matter, Ejes Gist Newspaper reports

The National Universities Commission, NUC, issued a circular on behalf of the government with the particular instruction to the university administrations to permit students to continue their academic work.

Osodeke Emmanuel ASUU Chairman replies FG on its Order

In response to the instruction, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, National President of ASUU, stated that the FG was not speaking to his members.

We do not have the campus’s keys, he declared. No university was shut down by us. The people who closed the universities have the power to determine whether or not to reopen them.

The government is not speaking to us, so we will not be going back to work. We did the necessary to exercise our right to appeal even if we did not start the action before the industrial court, he continued.

Osodeke said there was no set date for when the appeal court will hear the case.

Work is set to begin – CONUA

The Congress of University Academics, or CONUA, has declared that its members are prepared to return to work.

Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the national coordinator, assured our correspondent that none of his members ever went on strike.

“We did not initially go on strike; instead, we continued to work until the management of the universities closed the facilities.
