Arsenal announced on Saturday that it had agreed to a long-term contract with Benfica’s left-back Nuno Tavares.
In a transaction apparently valued approximately £8 million ($11 million), the Portuguese Under-21 international becomes Arsenal’s first signing of the transfer window.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said, “We welcome Nuno to the team.” “He is a young player with a lot of potential who has progressed well with Benfica in recent seasons and has also proven his worth by playing for Portugal’s Under-21 team.
“With this vitality on the left side of the pitch, Nuno’s presence will provide the squad extra strength and alternatives in defence.”
After travelling to Britain and satisfying coronavirus isolation standards, Tavares, 21, who played against Arsenal in the Europa League last season, will join Arteta’s team.
Arsenal has not stated how long Tavares’ deal would last, only that it will be “long-term.”
“Nuno is a terrific young player who was desired by a lot of clubs around Europe,” stated technical director Edu.
“In the left-back position, he’ll be a solid backup. We hope he will continue to develop with us and become a valuable component of the first-team squad.”
