Ejes Gist Newspaper has learned that decision-makers in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may have decided on a zoning structure for the top six positions in the party and administration at the national level.

According to a reliable party source in Abuja, the South-West is expected to produce the party’s next presidential flag-bearer despite initial hurdles. The North-East is rumoured to have been named as a running mate.

According to the source, the Senate President would be returned to the South-East, while the Speakership will be given to the North-West.

The system is similar to what the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) articulated as a governance approach in 1999 when Olusegun Obasanjo of the South-West was president. Atiku Abubakar, his deputy at the time, is a North-Easterner from Adamawa.

The first Senate President, the now-deceased Evan Enwerem, was from the South East. Salisu Buhari, the disgraced first Speaker, hails from Kano in Nigeria’s northwestern region.

Despite the fact that Enwerem and Buhari were removed from office for forgery, the slots in the two zones stayed for the eight years that Obasanjo and the SouthWest held the president. In zoning its national chairmanship position to the North-Central, the ruling party appears to have stuck to the PDP’s original model.

President Muhammadu Buhari, the party’s national head, has expressed his preference for former Nasarawa State governor and serving Senator Adamu Abdullahi for the party’s top office. In Solomon Lar, Barnabas Gemade, Audu Ogbeh, and Colonel Ahmadu Ali, the PDP produced four national chairmen from the North-Central during Obasanjo’s eight years in office.

The APC’s national secretary has also been relocated to the South-South. Following President Buhari’s endorsement of Adamu, party leaders in other zones are said to be playing hide-and-seek over the position of the national scribe.

To avoid having their dreams disrupted, party bigwigs seeking higher positions are alleged to have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that their geopolitical zones did not receive the top party officials.

Earlier attempts to zone the office to the South-West were greeted with significant opposition, based on rumours that its approval might impair the zone’s consideration for the president. The South-East was also tipped for the role, but it was ultimately lost due to strong opposition from persons within the zone wanting higher party and positions.

The Deputy National Chairman (South) position was eventually awarded to the South-East, and President Buhari is reportedly backing former Senate President Ken Nnamani for the position. Following the prior notion that some individuals from the zone were targeting the Presidency after eight years of President Buhari being from the zone, the North-West main stakeholders allegedly campaigned against having the national scribe position assigned to them.

The president’s zone was eventually given the number four position in government.

Meanwhile, those who oppose the recognised factions are not mellowing, despite the official legitimacy accorded to factions of the party in several state chapters that are riven by leadership crises.

In Lagos, Fouad Oki, the state chapter’s factional chairman, has launched a lawsuit seeking to oust Senator Bola Tinubu-backed leadership.

When the case was heard in front of a Federal High Court in Abuja on March 3, 2021, Justice Okorowo ordered the parties to appear on March 16.

The plaintiff added Chief Adebayo Adelabu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as co-defendants in the originating summons of Fouad Oki V APC and 2 Ors. Adelabu, the APC’s governorship candidate in Oyo State in 2019, served as the chairman of the electoral board that oversaw the disputed state congress that Oki is contesting.
