Joe Igbokwe, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has asked Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to “show respect and withdraw from the presidential race in 2023.”

Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that  Osinbajo has finally declared his candidacy for president, ending months of tepid denials.

The VP will be up against APC heavyweights such as Bola Tinubu, his political benefactor and former governor of Lagos State; Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Imo State Rochas Okorocha; and Yahaya Bello and Dave Umahi, governors of Kogi and Ebonyi states, respectively.

“Let me drop it here for history and posterity: If you are one of the people Asiwaju (Tinubu) raised up and you are eyeing the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, show respect and withdraw from the race,” Igbokwe wrote on his widely followed Facebook page.

When Tinubu was governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, Osinbajo served as attorney general and commissioner for justice for eight years. In December 2014, he was nominated as Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate for the 2015 presidential election by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Since then, Osinbajo has served as President Buhari’s vice president for about seven years, describing him as a “true Nigerian patriot.”
