Ajax fail to win at home to Go Ahead Eagles

Eagles defender Bassey denied clean sheet as Eagles hold Ajax at home

Ajax could only manage a draw against Go Ahead Eagles at home on Saturday, unable to fully capitalize on the points lost by championship rivals PSV earlier in the day, Ejes Gist Newspaper reports.

Willum Willumsson scored the equaliser for the Eagles after Davy Klaassen had given Ajax the advantage.

Two of Ajax’s summer acquisitions received their first starts for the Amsterdammers under Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder.

A chance was given to Austrian midfielder Florian Grillitsch and Argentinean winger Lucas Ocampos to compete for a starting position.

Just before the half-hour mark, Devyne Rensch nearly gave Ajax the lead, but his shot missed the post after his initial attempt had been deflected back into his path.

Before halftime, Brian Brobbey squandered another opportunity for the winners after Davy Klaassen’s fortunate deflection put the ball in his path. His attempt was blocked, leading to a throw-in.

As he had done so many times before, Klaassen broke the impasse. Prior to halftime, the midfielder was reached by team captain Dusan Tadic’s cross and reacted quicker than the Go Ahead Eagles’ defenders to score.

Go-Ahead Eagles were able to frustrate the defending champions by limiting Ajax’s possibilities.

When the Deventer club equalized with a counterattack 12 minutes from the end, they received their reward. Willum Willumsson, a 23-year-old winger, scored the goal.

After 81 minutes, Eagles goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange made a key stop to deny Tadic’s shot, and the game concluded in a 1-1 draw.
