Nigerian actor and former broadcaster Sadiq Daba, who is best known for his role as “Inspector Waziri” in the film October 1, has died.

Daba passed away on March 3, 2021, in the evening, after a long battle with leukaemia and prostate cancer.

Joe Odumakin, a close friend of the actor, revealed in a PUNCH report that Daba’s wife confirmed the veteran actor’s death.

Odumakin told PUNCH, “His wife just called me and we spoke.” “She said she was at the morgue,” says the narrator. I inquired as to what had occurred, and she informed me that he had been ill for about a week but had been at home, and that he had gone to the hospital late this afternoon.

“She explained that he hadn’t been eating much and that as soon as they arrived at the hospital, they began running various tests on him, including COVID-19,” she said. He was put on oxygen, but he passed away around 8:30 p.m.”

Daba, born Sadiq Abubakar Daba, revealed in 2017 that he had been diagnosed with Leukemia and Prostate Cancer. Several Nigerians, including Femi Otedola, a billionaire businessman, assisted him with fundraising.

Daba retired from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) after more than three decades of service. In the late 1970s, he rose to prominence as the star of Cockcrow at Dawn.

In 2015, Daba won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Inspector Waziri in Kunle Afolayan’s psychological thriller “October 1”.

On social media, Nigerians have paid tribute to the late actor:

“Sad that the cock will no longer crow at dawn,” former vice president Atiku Abubakar wrote on Twitter. Thank you, Sadiq Daba, for bringing joy into our homes. May you be forgiven for your sins, and may your memories be a blessing.”
