Ajax will pay the family of former player Abdelhak Nouri 7.85 million euros (£6.5 million) after he suffered serious brain damage as a result of poor medical care.
Abdelhak Nouri made his senior debut in 2016-17, but his playing career was cut short when he suffered a cardiac arrest during a pre-season match in Austria against Werder Bremen in 2017.

Despite being resuscitated on the field and rushed to the hospital, Nouri suffered permanent brain damage. Ajax later admitted that medical care on the field during the acute phase was insufficient and accepted responsibility for the consequences.

As a result of the amicable settlement, Ajax said they had reached an agreement with Abdelhak Nouri’s family and that the proceedings before an Arbitration Committee had been terminated.
“We are all aware that Abdelhak’s suffering and that of his loved ones is far from over. In a statement, Ajax general manager Edwin van der Sar said, “It remains a very sad situation, and that’s how we feel here at Ajax as well.”
“We are grateful for the way the family looks after Abdelhak 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a lot of love and attention. When I go to see him, the family always welcomes me with open arms.
