NDLEA Abba Kyari – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed how the suspended head of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT), DCP Abba Kyari, ran a drug syndicate in a video that is now viral.
The NDLEA had earlier declared him wanted for drug trafficking.
According to the NDLEA, an investigation found that the famed cop is a member of a global narcotics conspiracy.
The incident began on Friday, January 21, 2022, when DCP Kyari initiated a call to one of the NDLEA officers in Abuja at 2:12 p.m., according to the agency’s spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi.
He claimed that when the officer returned the phone two minutes later, Kyari informed him that he was coming to visit him after the Jumaat (weekly Friday prayer) session to resolve an operational concern.
“He (Kyari) appeared at the agreed-upon location of the meeting with the officer and went straight to the crux of the matter,” Babafemi stated.
“His (NDLEA officer’s) unit had detected and apprehended some traffickers who had entered the country with 25 kg of cocaine from Ethiopia.” He offered a narcotics transaction in which he and his team would take 15 kilograms of cocaine and leave 10 kilograms for the prosecution of drug suspects apprehended in Enugu.
“In the interim, the stolen cocaine will be replaced by a 15kg dummy.” He requested that the NDLEA officer urge personnel from the FCT Command to join in.
“By 11:05 a.m. on Monday, January 24, after the Agency given the officer permission to play along, he and Kyari had started a WhatsApp conversation that lasted the rest of the day. The cop stated that he was willing to participate in the game.
“At this time, Kyari said that the 15kg (which had already been taken out) was split between the informants who gave information for the seizure and himself and his guys from the Nigerian Police’s IRT. According to him, the informants were given 7 kilograms, while his team was given 8 kilograms that had already been sold.
“He then offered to compensate the NDLEA team (the officer and the FCT commander) by selling half of the remaining 10kg on their behalf, bringing the total cocaine for the prosecution down to just 5kg.”
“At N7 million per kilogram, the profit from the 5 kilograms would be N35 million, based on the black market rate of N570 per dollar on January 24, 2022. He would be providing $61,400 to the NDLEA squad in effect.”
According to him, Kyari exerted pressure on the NDLEA officer to finish the deal with the FCT Command commander to take control of the drugs and suspects from his men on the ground in Abuja.
He claimed Kyari was speaking from Lagos at the time, when he was purportedly on private business.
“The next day, January 25, Kyari offered to send his younger brother to deliver the cash while his men delivered the suspects, but our officer declined, indicating that he would prefer to deal with him in person and was thus willing to wait for him to return from Lagos,” Babafemi stated.

“In their discussion, he disclosed how his team received the information from a double-crosser who betrayed the traffickers to him, showing a sordid connection between law enforcement agents and the drug underworld; he narrated how acting on the tip-off, his team departed Abuja to Enugu and arrested the traffickers, removed part of the consignment on his instruction and replaced same with dummies.
“He also indicated how to identify the remnant of the original cocaine that would be delivered to NDLEA, five original packages marked with red dots. The reason for this was to avoid the dummies being subjected to test.
“He forwarded a picture of the marked original cocaine package. According to the plan, once the 5kg cocaine has been tested in the presence of the suspects and confirmed positive, there would be no need to test the remaining ones, being dummies.
“He also brought with him the money from the sale of the 5kg share of the NDLEA team, a total of $61,400. Our officer, however, preferred to take the money inside his car. Well, the car was wired with sound and video recorders.”
Abba Kyari, the Nigerian Police Force’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been arrested.
Kyari’s detention follows allegations of connection with a Brazilian cocaine cartel.
The National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA, had already designated him sought.
