Abba Kyari is embroiled in new controversy over Hushpuppi.
Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, has forwarded the Special Investigation Panel report on Abba Kyari’s alleged involvement in the $1.1 million fraud perpetrated by an Instagram influencer known as Hushpuppi and four others to Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and the Police Service Commission (PSC).
According to this online news outlet, the AGF’s office and the PSC received the report indicting “super cop” Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, last week.
The SIP Chairman, DIG Joseph Egbunike, presented the committee’s findings to the IG on August 26 at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
The report included the investigation’s case file, evidence and findings, as well as testimony from Kyari and other individuals and organisations involved in the matter.
A Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, Andrew Innocenti, alleged in a document titled ‘Criminal Complaint By Telephone Or Other Reliable Electronic Means’ filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California that Hushpuppi hired Kyari to detain a co-conspirator, Chibuzo Vincent, for threatening to expose an alleged $1.1 million fraud committed against a Qatari company.
Additionally, the agency stated that Hushpuppi deposited $20,600 in a bank account provided by Kyari. Kyari was ordered detained for ten days by the court.
Kyari was suspended from service by the Police Service Commission on July 31 in response to the allegations. Additionally, he appeared before the SIP, where he allegedly denied the allegations.
However, in an update on the case on Saturday, a senior official stated that the IG has directed that the former head of the Police Intelligence Response Team be questioned, following which he will be referred to the Force Disciplinary Committee, which deals with cases of misconduct and unprofessional conduct by senior officers.
According to reports, the FDC’s recommendations will be forwarded to the Police Service Commission, which is expected to make the final decision on Kyari’s fate.
According to a by PUNCH newspaper, the commission’s in-house panel charged with studying available documents related to the DCP’s indictment would soon conclude its investigation and submit its findings to the PSC’s management.
According to a credible source, “the commission and AGF received the police report last week, but there is nothing we can do at the moment.” The Inspector General has directed that Kyari be questioned. After the query is resolved, the matter is referred to the force’s disciplinary committee, which makes recommendations.
The FDC’s recommendations would be presented to the police service commission, and would serve as the basis for the commission’s decision.”
When contacted, the force’s spokesman, Frank Mba, a Commissioner of Police, promised to update the status of the case, but he did not respond to subsequent inquiries as of press time.
